The Victorian approved Longarm Category A & B Firearms Safety Course is a mandatory training program designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to apply for a Victorian firearm license. This course delivers essential instruction on firearm safety, legal responsibilities, secure storage requirements, and the ethical handling and use of longarm firearms within Victoria. 

Aligned with current legislative standards and industry best practice, the program aims to promote responsible firearm ownership, risk awareness and safe operational conduct.

Re-Qualification & Retention Training

The Firearms Re-Qualification Course is designed to ensure armed security officers maintain the competency, safety awareness and operational standards required to perform their duties responsibly. This program reinforces core firearms handling skills, legislative compliance and safe decision-making under professional use-of-force frameworks. A key component of the course is firearms retention training, which focuses on safeguarding issued equipment, reducing the risk of weapon loss or misuse and strengthening officer control in dynamic environments. Delivered in accordance with industry best practice and regulatory expectations, the course supports ongoing professional development while promoting accountability, safety, and operational readiness for armed security personnel.

SIFI - Security Industry Firearms Instructor Course

(Eligibility aligned with Victoria Police LRD Requirements)

The Security Industry Firearms Instructor (SIFI) Course is an advanced professional development program designed for experienced armed security personnel seeking approval to deliver firearms training within the Victorian private security industry. Approved by the Victoria Police Licensing & Regulation Division (LRD), this course develops the instructional, technical and compliance capabilities required to safely train and assess armed security officers in accordance with legislative and industry standards.

The program focuses on instructional methodology, range safety management, adult learning principles, firearms handling and operational risk control, ensuring that instructors can deliver high-quality, compliant firearms training and re-qualification programs. Successful completion supports applications for recognition as a Security Industry Firearms Instructor within Victoria’s regulated training framework.

Course Objectives

Participants completing the SIFI course will be able to:

  • Apply Victorian firearms legislation and private security regulatory requirements to training delivery.

  • Demonstrate advanced firearm handling, safety supervision and range control procedures.

  • Deliver structured firearms training using adult learning principles and competency-based assessment methods.

  • Conduct safe firearms drills, including retention principles, threat awareness and operational risk management.

  • Maintain accurate training records and comply with audit and reporting requirements.

Graduates of the SIFI course are positioned to deliver compliant firearms training, re-qualification programs, and safety instruction within the private security sector. The program reinforces professional accountability, safe operational conduct, and the consistent delivery of high-standard firearms education aligned with Victorian regulatory expectations.

LRD Eligibility Requirements (General Overview)

To be considered for SIFI approval or to undertake the instructor pathway, applicants are generally expected to meet key eligibility criteria set by LRD, including:

  • Hold a current Victorian private security trainer licence or relevant trainer endorsement.

  • Possess a current Victorian handgun and / or longarm firearms licence.

  • Complete an approved SIFI course delivered by an LRD-recognised Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

  • Hold a recognised training and assessment qualification such as TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or successor).

  • Demonstrate industry experience, current firearms competency and submit a written application to LRD requesting approval as a Security Industry Firearms Instructor.

Additional licensing, compliance and ongoing competency obligations may apply depending on the scope of training delivered and the applicant’s security licence status.

​Note: Final approval remains subject to assessment by the Licensing & Regulation Division and additional conditions or documentation may be required.​
